To date, 8 people have been sickened in the outbreak of Listeria infections linked to the cheese. Of those, 7 were hospitalized. One person in California has died. The other 7 people sickened in the outbreak are from Maryland.

Of the 8 cases, 5 of the illnesses were related to pregnancy, including 2 mother-newborn pairs and a newborn. Pregnant women are at higher risk of contracting listeriosis, and their babies are often born with the infection. The infection in these little ones can cause meningitis (brain infection) and other severe complications. It is extremely painful for them, and it can be fatal.
