Fatal House Explosion in Alliance, Nebraska

Why Didn’t Anyone Smell the Propane?

Propane build-up is the probably cause of a house explosion in Alliance, Nebraska, that tragically killed 84-year-old Patricia Vogel and injured Cynthia Wurm.

Propane is a colorless odorless gas.  To make sure people can smell it if it leaks, a foul-smelling odorant, ethyl mercaptan, is added to it. If there is not enough ethyl mercaptan in the propane, there is no way to smell it while it is building up under or around a house. This has been the cause of past explosions, and an investigation is needed to find out if that was the case in Alliance.

The propane explosion happened Thursday. It appears to have started with a fire, and then the house exploded. The home was leveled. The propane tank used to heat the home was intact.

The Nebraska State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the explosion. For help with an independent investigation and a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit, contact our law firm for a free consultation.
