Outbreak of Listeriosis linked to Crave Brothers Cheese

To date, A total of six persons infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes have been reported from five states: Illinois (1), Indiana (1), Minnesota (2), Ohio (1), and Texas (1). All six ill persons were hospitalized. One death was reported in Minnesota. In addition, one illness in a pregnant woman resulted in a miscarriage.

Fred has won money for clients in outbreaks exactly like this one caused by cheese.  He is currently representing a man who contracted a Listeria infection (listeriosis) after eating cheese purchased at Whole Foods Market. The man developed Listeria meningitis and almost died.

Evidence That Crave Brothers Cheese Caused the Listeria Outbreak

The evidence against Crave Brothers is significant:

  • 5 of the 6 people with CDC-confirmed Listeria infections definitely or probably ate Les Frères cheese made by Crave Brothers before getting sick.
  • During the inspection of the Crave Brothers facility in July 2013, the FDA collected a sample of Petit Frère with Truffles that was found to contain Listeria monocytogenes with the same DNA fingerprint as the outbreak strain.
  • Public health investigators used DNA “fingerprints” of Listeria bacteria obtained through diagnostic testing with pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) to identify cases of illness that may be part of this outbreak. In addition, whole genome sequencing was also used to define the outbreak strain. Whole genome sequencing has helped the CDC clarify which patients’ illnesses are related to the outbreak.
