Ike’s Restaurant, Jouni Meats and Gab Halal Foods Linked to Salmonella Outbreak

The CDC has issued its final update for the Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak linked ground beef processed by Jouni Meats, Inc. and Gab Halal Foods of Michigan.  Some of the 22 people sickened in the outbreak ate raw ground beef kibbeh served at a Sterling Heights, Michigan restaurant, Ike’s.  One of our clients, an Arizona resident, ate at Ike’s before becoming sick.

People from the following states were sickened in this outbreak: Arizona (1), Iowa (1), Illinois (2), Michigan (9), and Wisconsin (8). Illness onset dates ranged from December 9, 2012 to February 20, 2013. Patients range in age from 2 years to 87 years, with a median age of 45 years. Fifty-five percent of ill persons were male. Seven of the Salmonella victims were hospitalized, some for several days.

Prompted by the recall, Jouni Meats and Gab Halal Foods recalled ground beef:

  • On January 24, 2013, Jouni Meats, Inc. recalled about 500 pounds of ground beef products.
  • On January 25, 2013, Gab Halal Foods recalled about 550 pounds of ground beef products.

Epidemiologic, laboratory, and traceback investigations linked this outbreak to ground beef produced by Jouni Meats, Inc. and Gab Halal Foods. The raw ground beef kibbeh served at Ike’s Restaurant was made from one or more of the recalled products.

Health officials were first aware of the outbreak when seven people who ate at Ike’s were diagnosed with the same strain of Salmonella infection after eating raw ground beef kibbeh at Ike’s. Kibbeh is typically made of finely ground beef, minced onions, and bulghur wheat.
