Meningitis and Stroke from Steroid Injection in Virginia

Attorneys Fred Pritzker and David Szerlag are leading our Bad Bug Law Team in an investigation of the multi-state outbreak of fungal (Aspergillus, Exserohilum and perhaps other fungi) meningitis and stroke caused by steroid injections in the spinal area for pain. The steroid product, methylprednisolone acetate, was prepared by one compounding pharmacy, New England Compounding Center (NECC) of  Framingham, Massachusetts.  Fred and David recently won over $40,000,000 for clients injured by another medical product, and they are available for a free consultation here regarding a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit against NECC and possibly others.

Two medical facilities in southwestern Virginia received and used methylprednisolone from this manufacturer: Insight Imaging-Roanoke and New River Valley Surgery Center in Christiansburg, VA. If you or a family member received methylprednisolone from the specific lots during a spinal injection procedure between July 2012 and September 2012, you have probably been contacted. As you were probably told, you need to seek medical attention immediately if you have symptoms of meningitis or stroke. If there is a diagnosis of meningitis or stroke, Fred and David can help you.  The manufacturer has recalled the implicated lots of the medication and the product is no longer being used.

Symptoms of concern are new or worsening headache, fever, localized weakness, falls, difficulty walking and slurred speech.

Currently, the Virginia Department of Health has identified 24 individuals who received spinal injections and subsequently developed illnesses similar to what has been seen in patients in other states. All are residents of southwest Virginia. One of those persons has died.

The evidence to date suggests that the steroid medication was contaminated with fungus, AspergillusExserohilum and possibly others, during the compounding process. Given the nature of the illnesses, there may be other fungi and/or bacteria involved with this outbreak.

Our meningitis lawyers represent clients throughout the United States and have won millions for our clients. In addition to having won money for meningitis victims, Fred recently won over one million for the family of a woman who died from a compounding pharmacy error. Fred, David and their Bad Bug Law Team are available for a free consultation regarding a steroid meningitis lawsuit.
