ByHeart Recalls All Infant Formula After Link to Botulism Outbreak

ByHeart is recalling all of its infant formula after the bacteria that causes botulism was found in a container from the home of a sick baby. California health officials performed the testing as part of an investigation into a multistate botulism outbreak that sickened more than a dozen babies. Consumers who have ByHeart infant formula at home should not use it as botulism can cause severe illness and death.

What are the Symptoms of Botulism?

Botulism can be fatal. If you think your baby has botulism, see a doctor immediately. Symptoms can take as long as several weeks to develop. They include:

  • Difficulty feeding (sucking and swallowing)
  • Constipation
  • A weak or altered cry
  • Drooping eyelid
  • Sluggish pupils
  • Weakened neck muscle/ inability to hold up the head

ByHeart Botulism Outbreak

As of November 10, the outbreak includes 15 infants in 12 states:  Arizona, California, Illinois, Kentucky, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, and Washington.

The infants range in age from 2 to 23 weeks old. All of them were fed ByHeart before they became ill. Their caregivers noticed the onset of symptoms on dates ranging from August 9 to November 10, 2025. All of the babies required hospitalization.
