Home-delivery meals from Metabolic Meals are the source of a multistate Salmonella outbreak that includes 16 illnesses and seven hospitalizations. Tests show an antibiotic-resistant strain of Salmonella Enteritidis has sickened people in 10 states. Health officials are still working to determine which ingredient is the source of the contamination.

Salmonella Symptoms
Salmonella symptoms usually develop within six to 72 hours of eating contaminated food. They include:
- Fever
- Diarrhea that is sometimes bloody
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Abdominal pain
Infections that travel from the digestive tract to the bloodstream cause severe illness that is sometimes fatal. “Treating these invasive infections is challenging when an antibiotic-resistant strain is involved,” said Salmonella Lawyer Eric Hageman.
Metabolic Meals Salmonella Illnesses
Metabolic Meals delivers fully cooked, heat-and-eat entrees to subscribers nationwide. Between July 24, 2025, to August 15, 2025, customers began to fall ill. Sixteen cases in 10 states have been confirmed through testing, but the total number of people sickened is likely much higher, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Using whole genome sequencing tests, which identify the genetic “fingerprint” of bacterial strains, health officials were able to determine that 16 people were sickened by a Salmonella Enteritidis strain with the same fingerprint, meaning they all ate the same food. Ten of the 12 people health officials have interviewed so far said they had eaten a Metabolic Meals menu item before they got sick.
