Updated October 25 with new case total The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and state health officials are investigating reports of liver, bile duct, and gallbladder illness associated with Daily Harvest French Lentil and Leek Crumbles. At least 393 consumers used the FDA’s Consumer Adverse Events Reporting System to report illnesses, 133 of them were so sick they required hospitalization. Some patients had their gallbladders removed.
Daily Harvest has identified tara flour in French Lentil + Leek Crumbles as a possible source of reported illnesses. But after weeks of testing by the company and federal health officials, the specific contaminant has yet to be identified.
“We have been working closely with the FDA, the CDC as well as top doctors, microbiologists, toxicologists, and three independent labs to find the answer. We considered all possibilities, including processing issues or infection, and have ruled all of them out: Hepatitis A, Norovirus, a range of mycotoxins, including aflatoxins, food-borne pathogens including Listeria, E. coli, Salmonella, Staphylococcus Aureus (Staph), B.Cereus, and Clostridium Species and major allergens including egg, soy, milk, and gluten. Testing also confirmed there are no pesticides or the presence of heavy metal levels that would have caused the reported adverse effects,” a July 19 statement from Rachel Drori on the company’s website reads in part.
French Lentil + Leek Crumbles is the only Daily Harvest made with tara flour. Daily Harvest has cut ties with the tara flour producer which did not provide any other ingredient to the company.
Daily Harvest Recall
Daily Harvest French Lentil and Leek Crumbles were recalled on June 23 after reports of illness and potential liver function issues. Consumers who have this product in their freezers should not eat it. At the time of the recall, the company said it was aware of 470 reports of illness.
Between April 28 and June 17, 2022, approximately 28,000 units of this product were distributed to customers and online influencers nationwide through direct delivery and through sales at stores and pop-up locations.
The recalled French Lentil + Leek Crumbles were sold frozen in 12-oz, white pouches with the words “Daily Harvest,” “CRUMBLES,” and “French Lentil + Leek.” All lot codes are affected. No other Daily Harvest products are included in the recall.
Reported Symptoms
Symptoms reported include severe abdominal pain, frequent bouts of diarrhea, nausea, fever, yellowing of the skin and eyes, dark urine, light-colored stools, itching with no rash, fatigue, and body aches.
Daily Harvest customers reporting illness live in the following states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Utah, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin. The most recently reported illness was on September 4, 2022.
