Shrimp Salmonella Outbreak Ends But FDA Says Check Your Freezer

A frozen shrimp Salmonella outbreak is over but the FDA is worried some consumers may have the recalled product in their freezers. The Salmonella Weltevreden outbreak triggered a recall and then a huge expansion of that recall that included shrimp produced by Avanti Foods of India over a six-month period and sold under 18 brand names at Albertsons, Hannaford, Kroger, Meijer, Target, Whole Foods, and other stores. The frozen, peeled, cooked shrimp was sold in plastic pouches and in rings on plastic trays with cocktail sauce.

A total of nine people, ranging in age from 30 to 80 years old, were sickened between February 26, 2021, and July 17, 2021. Health officials interviewed seven of the patients who all reported eating shrimp before they became ill. Of those, three were hospitalized.

Illnesses were reported from four states. The case count from each state is: AZ (2), MI (2), NV (4), and (RI).

Health officials used whole genome sequencing to identify the genetic fingerprint of the Salmonella serotype that sickened these patients. Initially, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) declared an end to this outbreak in July. But then three more illnesses were discovered.
