A 12-state E. coli O121 outbreak linked to packaged cake mix has sickened 16 people. Seven people have been hospitalized, one of them with hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) a form of kidney failure that is a complication of E. coli infections.
A specific brand of cake mix has not yet been identified as the source of the outbreak as the people sickened reported eating a variety of mixes and brands. A 2016 E. coli O121 outbreak was linked to Gold Medal flour produced at a General Mills facility in Kansas City, Missouri. That outbreak sickened 63 people in 24 states. Seventeen people were hospitalized one of them with HUS.
The people sickened in this outbreak, who range in age from 2 to 73 years old, reported eating cake batter from cake mixes in the days before they became ill. Health officials used Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) to identify the genetic fingerprint of the E. coli that sickened each of these patients. The fingerprints for all patients match, indicating that they had been sickened by the same contaminated food.
