The recalled Fresh Express products containing iceberg lettuce, red cabbage and/or carrots have the Product Code Z178, or the letter “Z” at the beginning of the Product Code located on the upper right-hand corner of the front of packages.
The private label products identified so far were made for ALDI, Hy-Vee, Jewel-Osco and Walmart stores in the Midwest. Those products were recalled earlier this week. This recall includes products made for Giant Eagle and Shop-Rite stores and Fresh Express brand salads distributed to Montana, Oklahoma, the District of Columbia and 16 states in the South East, MidAtlantic and North East regions of the U.S.
Grocery stores that received products affected by this recall are located in the following states: Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia, Vermont, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia. (States newly identified as receiving recalled Fresh Express products are in bold.)
These recalls have been issued in connection with a bagged salad Cyclospora outbreak that has sickened 509 people in eight states. Twenty-three people have been hospitalized. Pritzker Hageman Cyclospora lawyers are representing clients in this outbreak and represented clients in the 2018 Cyclospora outbreak linked to Fresh Express salad sold at McDonald’s. The salads linked to that outbreak were also produced at the company’s Streamwood, IL facility.
Cyclospora is a parasite that is excreted in the feces of infected people. Illnesses occur when water containing infected human feces is used to grow or process produce or when food comes into direct contact with human fecal matter. Symptoms of a Cyclospora infection include explosive diarrhea that is sometimes watery, muscle aches, abdominal cramps, vomiting, fever and other flu-like symptoms.
