A bagged salad Cyclospora outbreak has sickened 54 people in Iowa who shopped at ALDI, Hy-Vee and Jewel-Osco stores. The garden salads, which contain red cabbage, carrots and iceberg lettuce, were produced by Fresh Express and sold under store brand names. All three grocery store companies have issued recalls for these products. Consumers who have recently purchased garden salads should check recall information carefully.
Garden Salad Cyclospora Recalls
ALDI Salad Recall June 22, 2020
ALDI posted a recall for Little Salad Bar Garden Salad on its website on June 22. In the recall announcement, ALDI said it has also removed the bagged salads from stores in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
The recalled Little Salad Bar Garden Salad was sold in 12 oz-bags with the UPC code 4099100082975 and “Best If Used By” dates of May 1 through June 29. No other ALDI products are affected.
Hy-Vee Salad Recall, June 22, 2020
The recalled Hy-Vee garden salad was sold in 12 oz. packages at Hy-Vee grocery stores in Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin. All UPC codes are included. No other Hy-Vee food items are impacted by this recall.
Jewel-Osco Salad Recall, June 22, 2020
The recalled Signature Farms Garden Salad was sold in 12-ounce bags with “BEST IF USED BY” dates of May 16 through July 4 or (5-16-20 through 7-04-20) printed on the top right corner of the front of the package. The recalled bagged salad product has a UPC code of 21130 98135 on the back of the package and the unique plant number S5417.
Bagged Salad Cyclodpora Outbreak
Clusters of illness have been associated with salads purchased from all three grocery store chains, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The people sickened in this outbreak range in age from 16 to 92 years old. Sixteen people have been hospitalized.
During interviews with health officials, they reported onset of symptoms on dates ranging from May 11, 2020, to June 14, 2020, after eating bagged salads they had purchased from grocery stores. In some cases, they were able to recall the specific names of the store brand salad.
In addition to the 54 cases in Iowa, cases have also been reported from Illinois (30), Kansas (1), Minnesota (13), Missouri (7), Nebraska (8) and Wisconsin (9).
Fresh Express salad has been linked to another Cyclospora outbreak. In 2018, salads made by Fresh Express and sold at McDonald’s locations sickened 511 people in 16 states, hospitalizing 24 of them.
