Butterball Ground Turkey Recall and Outbreak

A Salmonella outbreak linked to Butterball raw ground turkey products has sickened six people in three states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). One person has been hospitalized.

Butterball, based in Mount Olive, NC, issued a recall for ground turkey products sold nationwide on March 13, 2019 after health officials found the outbreak strain in unopened packages at the home where four case-patients live.

The case-patients range in age from less than 1 year old to 71 years old. Four of them live in Wisconsin. The other two illnesses were reported from Minnesota and North Carolina.

Butterball Ground Turkey Recall

The Butterball raw ground turkey recall includes six products sold in trays wrapped in plastic with the “sell or freeze by” date of 7/26/18, lot code 8188 and the establishment number “EST. P-7345” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to institutional locations and retailers nationwide including Kroger and Food Lion.
They recalled ground turkey products are:

  • 48-oz. “BUTTERBALL everyday Fresh Ground Turkey WITH NATURAL FLAVORING (85% LEAN/15% FAT)” UPC codes 22655-71555 or 22655-71557
  • 48-oz. “BUTTERBALL everyday Fresh Ground Turkey WITH NATURAL FLAVORING (93% LEAN/7% FAT)” UPC code 22655-71556
  • 16-oz. “BUTTERBALL everyday Fresh Ground Turkey WITH NATURAL FLAVORING (85% LEAN/15% FAT)” UPC code 22655-71546
  • 16-oz. plastic wrapped tray containing “BUTTERBALL everyday Fresh Ground Turkey WITH NATURAL FLAVORING (93% LEAN/7% FAT)” with sell or freeze by date of 7/26/18, lot code 8188 and UPC codes 22655-71547 or 22655-71561
  • 48-oz. “Kroger GROUND TURKEY FRESH 85% LEAN – 15% FAT” UPC code 111141097993
  • 48-oz. “FOOD LION 15% fat ground turkey with natural flavorings” UPC code 3582609294 represented on the label.

Ground Turkey Salmonella Outbreak

Federal and state agencies are investigating an outbreak of Salmonella Schwarzengrund that includes five people in two states. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA FSIS), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Wisconsin health and agriculture departments have determined that the Salmonella Schwarzengrund isolates from case-patients and the turkey products are closely related.
