Deadly Organic Carrot E. coli Outbreak
Outbreak patients said they became ill on dates ranging from September 6, 2024, to October 28, 2024. They range in age from 1 to 75 years old. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) tests were performed on the DNA culture from the patients. WGS identifies the genetic “fingerprint” of the bacteria. These tests showed that the patients were all sickened by the same E. coli strain indicating that they had all been exposed to the same source of contamination.
Health officials interviewed 27 of the patients and 26 of them said they had eaten carrots in the days before they developed E. coli symptoms including abdominal cramps and bloody diarrhea. They reported buying different brands from different grocery stores.
States reporting cases in this outbreak are: Arkansas, California, Colorado, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wyoming.
