Big Brook Farm Raw Milk Listeria Recall

Big Brook Farm in Oneida County, NY has issued a raw milk Listeria recall. Consumers who have recently purchased this milk should not drink it as Listeria can cause severe illness and death.  Among pregnant women, Listeria can cause miscarriage and stillbirth even if the expectant mother experiences only mild flu-like symptoms.

Symptoms of a Listeria Infection

Symptoms of a Listeria infection, called listeriosis, usually develop within 24 hours of exposure but can sometimes take as long as 70 days to appear.

They include:

  • High fever, severe headache
  • Upset stomach or diarrhea
  • Stiff neck, and other muscle aches
  • Loss of balance, confusion, and convulsions

Listeria poses a heightened risk to people 65 and over and those who have weakened immune systems. Pregnant women are 20 times more likely than other people to contract Listeria infections.
