Westin Bonaventure Shigella Outbreak

A Shigella outbreak at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel & Suites in Los Angeles includes at least six people, two of whom are hospitalized. The food safety attorneys at Pritzker Hageman are investigating this outbreak.

Shigella bacteria are genetically very similar to E. coli, but Shigella is more contagious. Both are spread through the fecal-oral route, meaning bacteria in an infected person’s stool are ingested by others.

Symptoms of a Shigella Infection, Shigellosis

Symptoms of a Shigella infection, called shigellosis, usually appear within one to two days of exposure. They include:

  • Bloody diarrhea, or diarrhea that lasts more than, three days
  • Fever
  • Abdominal pain
  • The urge to have a bowel movement when the bowels are empty

In some cases, severe complications can occur including reactive arthritis, and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a form of kidney failure.

Over-the-counter anti-diarrheal medications and antibiotics should not be given to patients with E. coli infections as they can increase the chance of developing HUS.
