Consumers who have purchased these products should not eat them as Listeria can cause serious illness and death. Among pregnant women, Listeria can cause miscarriages and stillbirths.

The recalled leafy greens, produced at the company’s Jessup, MD facility, have a “BEST IF USED BY May 1, 2023” date. They were distributed to retailers and distributors in MA, MD, NJ, NY, VA, and PA.

On May 12, Lancaster Foods updated its above list of recalled products to include:

Lancaster Brand Spinach item #41714, “Best If Used By” date April 29, 2023

Symptoms of a Listeria infection include high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, other stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea,  confusion, and loss of balance. Pregnant women can suffer miscarriages and stillbirths even if they only experience mild flu-like symptoms.

The problem was discovered during routine testing by the New York Agriculture and Markets Food Safety Division.
