What is Hepatitis A and What are its Symptoms?

Hepatitis A is a highly contagious virus that causes inflammation of the liver. It is transmitted when stool from an infected person contaminates food that is ingested by others. This happens when infected food handlers don’t wash their hands properly after using the restroom.

Symptoms of a hepatitis A infection include yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, clay-colored or light-colored stools, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, decreased appetite, fever, fatigue, and joint pain. These symptoms usually develop two to seven weeks after exposure but small children are often asymptomatic.
