On January 19, 2022, Frozen Food Development of Naples, FL issued the recall for specific lots of Lidl brand frozen chopped spinach in 12-oz bags. The packages are marked with the lot codes  R17742 or R17963 and the “best by” date of 09/10/23. The recalled frozen spinach was distributed to Lidl stores in GA, SC, NC, VA, MD, DE, NY, NJ, and PA.

At the time the recall was issued, the company was unaware of any illnesses. But symptoms of a Listeria infection, called listeriosis, can take as long as 70 days to develop. These symptoms include high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, other muscle stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, confusion, and loss of balance. Pregnant women who get Listeria infections can suffer miscarriage or stillbirth even if they only experience mild flu-like symptoms.

Listeria infections aren’t common but when they do occur, they usually cause serious illness. Every year, about 1,600 people in the U.S. get listeriosis. Most of them require hospitalization, about 20 percent of cases are fatal. .

Although Listeria is a bacteria found in nature, it thrives in cool, damp areas such as food packing and processing environments. Because Listeria can survive cold temperatures, it is difficult to eradicate it from food-packing equipment and processing facilities, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

This problem was discovered during routine product testing. The FDA and the company are investigating how the contamination occurred. While this investigation is ongoing, production of the product has been suspended.
