The Pennsylvania Agriculture Department has issued a Listeria recall for BeiHollow raw milk and pasteurized cheese. Consumers who have purchased these products should not consume them as Listeria can cause serious illness and death. Among pregnant women, Listeria can cause miscarriage and stillbirth.
BeiHollow Farms, located on Chubb Road in Elizabethville, produces raw milk and cheese, and a pasteurized, “cup cheese” and “cheese melt.” The BeiHollow Listeria recall includes:
- BeiHollow raw milk, half gallons, and three-quarter gallons, sold between October 12 and October 21
- BeiHollow raw chocolate milk, half gallons, and three-quarter gallons, sold between October 12 and October 21
- BeiHollow pasteurized cheese melt and cup cheese, various sizes, sold between September 20 and October 21
Listeria’s High Hospitalization and Death Rates
Symptoms of a Listeria infection include severe headache, stiff neck, high fever, muscle aches, and balance issues. Symptoms can appear within 24 hours of consuming contaminated food or beverages, but sometimes it can take as long as 70 days. Pregnant women can suffer a miscarriage or stillbirth even if they only experience mild symptoms. Ninety percent of people with Listeria infections require hospitalization and 20 percent die.
Pregnant women are 10 times more likely than the general population to contract Listeria infections. Other high-risk groups include people with compromised immune systems, older adults, and young children.
BeiHollow Wouldn’t Disclose Stores Where Recalled Products Were Sold
The agriculture department knows that recalled products were sold at BeiHollow Farm stores in Elizabethville and Lykens, Dauphin County but officials are uncertain of which other stores sold the recalled products because the farm refused to supply a list.
According to the farm’s website, in addition to its farm stores, other stores that sell BeiHollow products are:
- Hoover’s Discount Grocery
- Indian Trail Country Market
- Ridgeview Foods
- Shady Lane Hardware & Variety
