Vibrio is a bacteria that grows well in warm, coastal waters. And the record-breaking heat wave in Washington this summer has warmed up coastal waters. Although any shellfish can become contaminated with Vibrio, oysters are most commonly associated with these infections.

The two Vibrio species most commonly associated with foodborne illness are Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio vulnificus. Vibrio vulnificus causes severe illness. Because 20 percent of all Vibrio vulnificus infections are fatal it is considered the leading cause of death related to seafood consumption in the U.S.

The illnesses reported from Seattle restaurants this summer are fromVibrio parahaemolyticus. Symptoms of these infections usually develop within one to three days of consuming the contaminated food and last about three days. They include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, vomiting, nausea, headache, fever, and chills. People with liver disease, cancer, or other conditions that compromise the immune system are at high risk of developing more serious infections.

Between June 28 and July 17, 12 Vibrio illnesses from raw oysters were reported from eight Seattle restaurants: Crawfish King (1), Damn the Weather (1), Salty’s on Alki (1), Taylor Shellfish (1), Emmett Watson’s Oyster Bar (1), Walrus and Carpenter (1),  The Crab Pot (4) and White Swan Public House (2).

The two Vibrio Illnesses reported from raw oysters at White Swan Public House occurred on July 17. The four illnesses reported from the Crab Pot occurred on June 28, July 2, and July 7.
