Health officials investigating a multistate Listeria outbreak linked to Hispanic-style fresh, soft cheeses found Listeria monocytogenes in El Abuelito brand queso fresco after one patient reported eating it in the weeks before becoming ill. The test results, announced yesterday, come months after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning letter to the Paterson, NJ-based company after inspectors found food safety violations including other Listeria species at the facility where the cheese is made.

The outbreak includes four illnesses in Maryland and one each in New York, Connecticut, and Virginia. Health officials have interviewed four of the patients and collected their food histories. Three of them said that in the weeks before they developed symptoms of a Listeria infection they had eaten Hispanic-style fresh, soft cheeses, three of them specifically mentioned queso fresco and at least one, the patient in Connecticut, mentioned El Abuelito brand by name.

So, the Connecticut Department of Health purchased El Abuelito queso fresco from a grocery store and tested it. The Listeria isolate they found in the cheese is currently undergoing whole genome sequencing to see if its genetic “fingerprint” matches the print of the strain cultured from the outbreak patients.

The test result, which did not prompt the company to issue a recall, should not have come as a surprise.

Inspection Reveals Serious Food Safety Violations

During a January 2020 inspection, FDA investigators found serious food safety violations at El Abuelito’s facility located on Main Street in Paterson including non-pathogenic Listeria species indicating that the environment in the facility is conducive to the growth of Listeria monocytogenes which can cause serious illness and death.

IListeria lawyer- Queso-frescon June 2020, the FDA issued a warning letter after finding the company’s response to the inspection inadequate. In the letter, the FDA notes that the company was not testing its facility for Listeria, did not have in place a hazard analysis for each type of food it manufactures, established preventative controls for bacteria and other hazards, or a written food safety plan.  “As noted above, Listeria monocytogenes is a known or reasonably foreseeable hazard for cheese; sanitation controls are generally applied to prevent contamination of RTE food such as cheese from the environment, and environmental monitoring for Listeria spp. is usually used to verify these controls,” the letter states.

The FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are advising that no one eat El Abuelito queso fresco at this time.
