El Abuelito Listeria Cheese Recall Includes These CT Stores, 1 Illness

Forty Connecticut stores (listed below) sold El Abuelito queso fresco and other cheeses recalled in connection with a deadly Listeria outbreak that includes one illness in CT.  Last month, state health officials were the first to link the cheese, made by the Paterson, NJ-based company, to the outbreak which now includes 11 illnesses and one death. Last week, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a list of stores in 25 states that received the products now under recall. Last night, the agency announced Rhode Island had been inadvertently omitted from the list and 26 states, not 25, actually received the potentially contaminated cheeses.

Symptoms of a Listeria Infection

Among pregnant women, Listeria can cause miscarriage, stillbirth or premature delivery of an infected newborn. This outbreak includes two pregnancy-related cases.

Symptoms of a Listeria infection usually develop within two weeks of exposure but can take as long as 70 days to develop. They include severe headache, high fever, stiff neck, other muscle stiffness, and loss of balance. Sometimes those symptoms are preceded by bouts of nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea. If you live in Connecticut and developed symptoms of a Listeria infection after eating one of the recalled cheeses, please see a doctor right away.

During interviews with health officials, the case patients in this outbreak reported eating Hispanic-style fresh, soft cheeses in the weeks before they became ill. Six of them said they had eaten queso fresco. Two people specifically mentioned El Abuelito brand, another person recalled eating Rio Grande brand queso fresco which is also made by El Abuelito.
