Symptoms of a Campylobacter infection usually develop within two to five days of exposure and last about a week. They include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever. For people with compromised immune systems, these infections can be life-threatening.
A small percentage of people with Campylobacter infections develop a complication called Guillian-Barre Syndrome (GBS) that causes weakness and paralysis that can last for weeks or months. Some people who develop GBS have permanent nerve damage, about 5 percent of cases are fatal.
