Serenity Meadows Dairy Raw Milk Tests Positive for Listeria, NY Warns

New York state agriculture officials are warning consumers that raw milk from Serenity Meadows Dairy has tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, a pathogen that can cause serious illness and death. Among pregnant women, Listeria can cause miscarriage and stillbirth.

Consumers who have purchased the milk from the diary located at 2890 Jorolemon Road in Weedsport should not drink it. Symptoms of a Listeria infection can take as long as two months to develop. They include high fever, severe headache, muscle stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

The dairy has stopped selling the milk until samples tested are free of the bacteria.

Raw Milk

Because it is not pasteurized, raw milk can contain Listeria and other pathogens that cause serious illness. Children are disproportionately affected by these illnesses. A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that children were involved in 82 percent of raw milk outbreaks that occurred between 1998 and 2009. And a study by the Minnesota Department of Health found that 76 percent of those with food poisoning illnesses from raw milk that are not part of an outbreak are children five and under.
