Salmonella Outbreak at Morimoto Napa in California Sickens Six

A Salmonella outbreak at Morimoto Napa restaurant in Napa Valley, California has sickened at least six people, according to a news report from the Napa Valley Register. Dr. Karen Relucio of Napa County Public Health told the paper that there are at least six confirmed cases of “Salmonella-related food borne illnesses” among customers who ate at the restaurant between October 10 and October 12, 2016.

The restaurant, which is on Main Street in Napa Valley, is cooperating with public health officials in this investigation according to the report. Relucio said that officials found that the facility is “very clean and organized with strict operating procedures,” during an inspection. She added that there is not any ongoing risk associated with the restaurant.

Salmonella outbreaks in the past have been linked to foods such as chicken, pork, beef, eggs, and contaminated produce. Cross-contamination between uncooked meats and ready to eat foods has also been the cause of previous outbreaks. If you eat undercooked meats or raw meats or eggs, that increases the chance that you will get sick. Raw or undercooked seafood has also been the source of past outbreaks. We do not yet know exactly what caused this particular Salmonella outbreak.

The symptoms of a Salmonella infection include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea that may be bloody, fever, chills, headache, and muscle pains. These symptoms usually begin six to seventy-two hours after exposure to the bacteria. Most people recover on their own without medical treatment, but some people get so sick usually with dehydration or sepsis, that they need to be hospitalized.
