Cumin and Cajun Seasoning Recall Due to Risk of Allergic Reaction to Peanut Protein

The Spice Mill of Manchester, Connecticut issued a recall of ground cumin and Cajun seasoning because they may contain undeclared peanut proteins. Anyone with a severe peanut allergy who consumes these products could go into anaphylactic shock (anaphylaxis) and die.

The recall was initiated after peanut proteins were found in an ingredient used to make the recalled spices. This allergen was not declared on the products’ ingredient statements.

For people with severe peanut allergies, even an extremely small amount of peanut protein could kill them. Because this is so serious, the law requires companies to put information on product labels about peanut ingredients.

Recall Details

The recalled spices were sold at local markets in Connecticut, through The Spice Mill’s website and at the company’s retail store in Manchester.

This recall affects the following products:

  • Ground Cumin 2.75 oz. – UPC 811267012008 – Lot # 55996 – Best By Date: 11/16, 12/16, 1/17
  • Cajun Seasoning 4 oz. – UPC 811267011735 – Lot# 1432421 Best By Date: 12/16,1/17

The spices were packaged in November, December and January in plastic bottles with a black flip-top lid. The Lot number is printed directly on the bottle in black ink.

The contaminated ingredient used to make the spices was purchased by Spice Mill from a supplier. Both that supplier and Spice Mill are responsible for any illnesses. Although no illnesses have been reported, people often keep spices for months (or years in my case).
