2014 Michigan E. coli Outbreak Linked to Ground Beef Served at Restaurants

At least 5 people have been sickened in an outbreak of E. coli infections in Michigan. Those sickened ate at a number of restaurants in the following counties:

  • Kent
  • Livingston
  • Oakland
  • Ottawa
  • Washtenaw.

Our E. coli lawyers are investigating this outbreak.

“Ground beef continues to cause outbreaks of E. coli illnesses,” said attorney Fred Pritzker, who recently won $4.5 million in a personal injury lawsuit against a chain restaurant that served beef tainted with E. coli.

All of the people sickened were adults between the ages of 20 and 41. Symptom onset dates range from April 22 – May 1, 2014. Three people were hospitalized with complications, which can include severe dehydration, colitis, hypertension, pancreatitis and kidney failure.

Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) testing found that the 5 illnesses were caused by E. coli bacteria with the same DNA fingerprint. This is solid evidence that the 5 illnesses have the same food source. Detailed information gathered from ill persons and their families points to ground beef served at Michigan restaurants as the most likely source of the outbreak.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is working with local health departments and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to determine the source of the ground beef and how widely it was distributed. These traceback investigations can be difficult with ground beef because the final product can be a combination of beef pieces from various companies. So one hamburger could be made from beef sold by several meat processors.

When the suppliers, processors and cattle farms are identified, all of those companies can be added as defendants (parties that are sued) in a lawsuit for compensation. The lawsuits will ask for money to cover expenses, losses, pain and suffering and emotional distress.
