Norovirus Deaths at Minneapolis Veteran’s Home

Four residents of the Minnesota Veterans Home in Minneapolis died this month, all of them having symptoms of norovirus, a viral, highly contagious infection. In response, the home has put a hold on new admissions, according to the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs.

The norovirus outbreak also sent one resident to the hospital. The Minnesota Veterans Home reported 8 cases of illness in residents last week to the Minnesota Department of Health. Several employees of the home have also been sickened and have been asked to stay away from work for 48 hours after symptoms (primarily diarrhea) end.

Norovirus can spread like wildfire in a nursing home.

This veterans home has been the focus of other state and federal investigations, including an investigation into 4 deaths health officials suspect were caused by negligence, including wrong doses of drugs.
