In October of 2013, the DuPage County Health Department linked 2 cases of Legionnaires’ disease with the spa in the LA Fitness in Naperville, Illinois. Legionella bacteria, the pathogen that causes Legionnaires’ disease, was found in the spa water. On October 23, the spa was closed for cleaning and remediation followed by clearance testing.

After almost 3 months, the spa is now open.

Spas are the prefect breeding ground for Legionella bacteria. When spa water is contaminated with Legionella, anyone who breathes in spa mist can get Legionnaires’ disease, a severe form of pneumonia.
