Specialty Compounding Recall Due to Infections at Corpus Christi Medical Hospitals in Texas

The FDA has announced a recall of all “sterile” medications made by Specialty Compounding, LLC, a subsidiary of Peoples Pharmacy Inc.  The recall was announced after IV infusions of calcium gluconate “compounded” by the company were associated with 15 cases of severe bacterial infections at two Texas hospitals, Corpus Christi Medical Center Doctors Regional and Corpus Christi Medical Center Bay Area.

Yet another outbreak of infections caused by products from a compounding pharmacy. Some of these companies pose as pharmacies to avoid FDA oversight, but they are manufacturing medications and are not pharmacies in practice. This has got to stop. We are representing several people who got spinal meningitis and other meningits infections from steriod medication compounded by New England Compounding Center, a compounding pharmacy that went bankrupt after hundreds of people get infections, many of whom died.

We are suing the clinics that administered the tainted NECC drugs because we allege it was negligent to do so. Our hope is that these lawsuits will send a clear message to clinics and hospitals that they can’t jeopardize patient health to save money by using medications that were manufactured without FDA oversight, which is illegal.

This current Specialty Compounding recall applies to all unexpired sterile compounded products dispensed since May 9, 2013, including all strengths and dosage forms.  The recalled products were distributed directly to hospitals and physician offices in Texas. Recalled products were also sent directly to patients located nationwide with the exception of North Carolina.

According to the recall, Specialty Compounding is notifying its customers by telephone, fax, electronic mail and/or regular mail of this recall. If you are notified, stop using the medication and then call us if you think the medication caused a hospital infection or any other infection.

You have the right to sue for compensation, including hospital and other medical expenses, lost income (time off of work), pain and suffering, emotional distress, disability, loss of quality of life and other damages. If your loved one died of a hospital infection or any infection you think is related to this recall, you may have a wrongful death claim.
