Why Blood Donation Matters in Minnesota
Memorial Blood Centers is a nonprofit, community-based blood center that supplies blood and blood products to hospitals throughout Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Donated blood is used for trauma care, surgery, cancer treatment, complications during childbirth, and other serious medical needs.
Hospitals need blood on hand before an emergency happens. Regular donations help maintain a dependable supply for patients who need blood unexpectedly and those receiving ongoing treatment. According to Memorial Blood Centers, one pint of donated blood can help save as many as three lives.
Blood donations are used every day to care for people with serious injuries and illnesses. Our attorneys represent people whose lives have been changed by catastrophic injuries, so we understand how important access to blood can be when someone needs emergency or ongoing medical care.
What to Know Before Donating Blood
Most people qualify to donate blood, but eligibility depends on factors such as age, health, medications, recent illness, travel, tattoos, and other circumstances. Memorial Blood Centers provides current blood donor eligibility information for anyone with questions about whether they can donate.
The blood donation process typically takes about 45 to 60 minutes. Memorial Blood Centers recommends eating a balanced meal, drinking plenty of water, and bringing a photo ID.
Therapy Dog Teams Will Be Onsite
Therapy dog teams from North Star Therapy Animals will be onsite during portions of the blood drive to visit with donors.
North Star Therapy Animals is a Minnesota nonprofit whose registered therapy animal teams visit hospitals, schools, senior living communities, community events, and other settings throughout the Twin Cities. Its therapy animal teams are registered through Pet Partners.
