2 Dead, 22 Sick in 13-State Listeria Monocytogenes Outbreak

A 13-state Listeria outbreak has sickened 24 people, two of whom have died. Genetic tests on the outbreak strain show it closely resembles the strain linked to an ongoing Listeria outbreak in Canada. That outbreak has been linked to Rosemount brand diced, cooked chicken that was supplied to cafeterias, hospitals and nursing homes. Rosemount has issued a recall.

The Canadian outbreak includes seven illnesses in three provinces – five in Ontario and one each in Columbia and Manitoba. An investigation of those illnesses prompted a cooked chicken recall in the U.S. after Canadian health officials found Listeria in a diced cooked chicken product produced by Tip Top Poultry, Inc., a Rockmart, Ga. That recall, issued August 20, 2019, includes products sold to hotels and restaurants nationwide under the brand names Tip Top, Perdue, Gordon, West Creek and Sysco.

U.S. health officials say the investigation of the U.S. outbreak source is still ongoing and they have not yet identified a specific food source. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state health officials are gathering information from those sickened, who range in age from 35 to 92, about foods they ate before they became ill.

The illnesses occurred between July 20, 2017 and August 1, 2019. Twenty-two people were hospitalized. The case count from each state is: California (4), Florida (1), Iowa (1), Illinois (4), Indiana (1), Kansas (1), Kentucky (1), Michigan (1), Missouri (3), New York (2), Ohio (2), Oregon (2), and Texas (1).
