2015 Barber Foods Chicken Recall Expanded

Barber Foods, a Portland, Maine establishment, has expanded a July 2, 2015, recall to 1,707,494 pounds (previously 58,320 pounds) of frozen, raw stuffed chicken products, including certain lots of chicken Kiev, Cordon Bleu, Cordon Swiss, tenders and fingers. These products were recalled because they may be contaminated with Salmonella Enteritidis, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

The chicken products were produced between February 17, 2015 and May 20, 2015.  To view a full list of products recalled as part of this expansion, please click here.

Salmonella Outbreak Investigation

FSIS was first notified of a cluster of Salmonella Enteritidis illnesses in Minnesota and Wisconsin on June 24, 2015. Working in conjunction with Minnesota State Departments of Health and Agriculture, Wisconsin Department of Health Services, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), FSIS determined that there is a link between the frozen, raw, stuffed chicken products from Barber Foods and this illness cluster.

This link was established with:

  • epidemiological evidence (interviews with case patients);
  • microbiological evidence (tests on Salmonella isolates); and
  • traceback investigations (looking at records to find the initial food source).

To date, six cases of Salmonella Enteritidis linked to the chicken products have been identified in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Illness onset dates range from April 5, 2015 to June 23, 2015.  Because the recall involves frozen food products, there may be more outbreak cases.
