Fresh Curd Recall 2014 Prompted by Listeria Infections

Global Garlic, Inc. of Miami, Florida, has recalled 2 De Mi Pais brand products because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes: Cuajada Fresca (Fresh Curd) 12oz. and DeCuajada Olanchana (Fresh Curd) 12oz. The FDA is investigating cases of Listeria food poisoning associated with these products.

Global Garlic distributed the recalled products in Florida, Louisiana, Tennessee, and North Carolina from April 1st thought October 14, 2014 to distributors and retail stores. Both products can be identified by the same UPC code on the label of the plastic bag 896211002380 and the products can be identified by the Best Used by Date sticker on the label of the plastic bag of 07/01/14 through 12/31/14.

The investigation into the outbreak of Listeria infections (listeriosis) has included testing product samples and environmental swabs from the plant where the fruit was processed. The results are evidence pointing to the curd as the source of the outbreak–some of the finished product at the plant contained Listeria monocytogenes.

The manufacturing company has ceased the production and distribution of the curd until more is known.
