During the last six weeks, at least two patients at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati have developed Legionnaires’ disease during their stays. Legionnaires’ Disease is a severe form of pneumonia that people get when they inhale vapor that is contaminated with Legionella bacteria. Hospital officials say they are working with state and local health departments to determine if the hospital’s water system is the source of the outbreak.

What is Being Done?
A statement released by the Christ Hospital Health Network reads in part, “As part of its standard safety practice, The Christ Hospital routinely monitors, tests, and treats its water systems to minimize the presence of Legionella and other waterborne pathogens.”
The Ohio Department of Health, the Cincinnati Health Department, and the Hamilton County Public Health are conducting more water tests at the hospital’s main campus and installing filters on faucets and showers.
What are the symptoms of Legionnaires’ DIsease?
Legionella bacteria are found in nature but thrive in man-made water systems. Infections are not contagious and cannot be spread person-to-person.
Legionnaires’ disease symptoms usually appear within two to fourteen days of exposure and include:
- High fever
- Cough
- Shortness of breath
- Muscle aches and fatigue
- Headaches
- Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
- Confusion or other changes in mental status
