Meredith Woods Campground Legionnaires’ Disease Outbreak

A Legionnaires’ disease outbreak at Meredith Woods and Clearwater Campground in Meredith, NH has sickened five people, according to the state department of health and human services. All five patients, who visited the campground between early fall 2021 and January 2023, were hospitalized and have recovered.

Legionnaires’ disease is a severe form of pneumonia that people get when they inhale water droplets that are contaminated with Legionella bacteria. It is not contagious. Outbreaks are often linked to pools, hot tubs, fountains, and the plumbing systems of commercial buildings.

In addition to cabin and RV campsite rentals, Meredith Woods and Clearwater Campground has an indoor, heated pool and a hot tub, according to its website. “Anybody choosing to stay at this facility should be aware of the ongoing outbreak investigation and potential risk for exposure to Legionella bacteria through the facility’s water system,” State Epidemiologist Dr. Benjamin Chan said in a press release.

Results of environmental tests at the facility have detected Legionella contamination in the water system at several locations, state health officials said. They are working with the owners of the campground, the state department of environmental services, and an environmental consultant to develop and implement a water management plan.

Legionella Bacteria
Legionella bacteria cause Legionnaires’ disease. Breathing in water mist contaminated with even a few cells of this dangerous pathogen can cause pneumonia.

Symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease include shortness of breath, cough, fever, muscle aches, and headaches. Usually, these symptoms develop within two to 14 days of exposure. Legionnaires’ disease often requires hospitalization and is often fatal. People who visited the campground and develop symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease should see a doctor and mention exposure.
