Maison Terre of Little Rock, AR recalled its Goldenseal Root Powder sold on Amazon.com due to microbial contamination. The recall came after the FDA issued a warning that advised consumers not to use the product. Maison Terre repackaged and distributed the product after purchasing it from Starwest Botanicals in Sacramento, CA. The recalled products were purchased on Amazon.com between 01/25/2015 to 08/04/2020. Through a laboratory analysis of a product sample, the FDA discovered contamination with high counts of various bacteria, including Enterobacter cloacae, Cronobacter sakazakii, Cronobacter dublinensis, among others.
According to the FDA’s warning, the use of contaminated products can cause serious infections that can lead to severe complications such as death among infants and people with weakened immune systems. Maison Terre received one report of an infant death associated with use of the product on the umbilical cord stump. The FDA recommends that anyone who has experienced an adverse reaction after using Maison Terre Goldenseal Root Powder should contact their health care provider.
