The two Round Barn guests contracted Legionnaires’ disease, a severe form of pneumonia transmitted through contaminated water vapor, within ten to 14 days of their stay at the lodge, the incubation period for the lung infection.

People get Legionnaires’ disease when they breathe in water vapor that is contaminated with Legionella bacteria. It is not spread through person-to-person contact. Legionella is found in nature but grows best in warm, stagnant water. The complex plumbing systems of large buildings, hot tubs and cooling towers are common sources of outbreaks.
