EzriCare and Delsam Pharma Artificial Tears Linked to Eye Infections

EzriCare and Delsam Pharma brand artificial tears have been recalled after being linked to a VIM‐GES‐CRPA bacteria outbreak. Multiple patients have suffered permanent blindness from associated infections and at least one person has died.

Recall Prompted by Eye Infection Risk

Kareway Products, Inc recalled 60,000 lots of Gericare Eye Wash, Sterile Eye Irrigation Solution that were packaged in 4 fluid ounce containers in February of 2018. The recall was issued because the product has been found to have potential microbial contamination which compromises sterility, according to an FDA safety alert.

“Use of the affected product could be calamitous for any population due to a probability of a potentially sight threatening eye infection or impairment.”FDA Safety Alert

The recalled product, GeriCare Eye Wash, Sterile Eye Irrigation Solution is used as an eyewash for daily use or emergency eye cleansing, in which case it is used to flush foreign material. It is packaged in 4 fluid ounce (118 ml) bottles. The affected Gericare Eye Wash, Sterile Eye Irrigation Solution lots include the following Lot#86041601 and expiration date of 09/2019. The product can be identified by UPC 3-57896-18604-3. The product was distributed throughout the United States.

Eye Irrigating Solution and Wash Recalled

United Exchange Corp. of Cerritos, CA, recalled Rugby-branded Eye Irrigating Solution and Major-branded Eye Wash because of possible microbial contamination in September of 2016. These products consist of a purified water solution.

The Eye Wash/Eye Irrigating Solution was packaged in 4 oz (118mL) bottles. The Rugby-branded Eye Irrigating Solution and Major-branded Eye Wash were distributed nationwide to retailers, hospitals and pharmacies. The company learned of the potential issue through the receipt of a product complaint regarding this product.
