Honda Airbag Recall and Lawsuit for Injury or Death

Contact our law firm about a lawsuit for personal injury or wrongful death caused by a defective airbag. This week, Honda issued two recalls, both because the airbags on certain vehicles may be defective.

Of the 10 deaths linked to Takata airbags, 9 of them were in Honda vehicles.

Recall Due to Possible Airbag Rupture

On February 3, 2016, Honda announced a recall of about 2,230,000 of its vehicles because they are “equipped with a dual-stage driver frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion which, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture.” Honda’s numbers for this recall are JX2, JX3, and JX4. Below is the list of Honda vehicles involved in this airbag recall:

Honda

  • 2001-2007 Accord
  • 2001-2005 Civic
  • 2003-2005 Civic Hybrid
  • 2001-2004 Civic CNG
  • 2002-2011 CR-V
  • 2011-2015 CR-Z
  • 2003-2011 Element
  • 2010-2014 FCX Clarity
  • 2009-2013 Fit
  • 2013-2014 Fit EV
  • 2010-2014 Insight
  • 2002-2004 Odyssey
  • 2003-2008 Pilot
  • 2006-2014 Ridgeline

In the event of a crash necessitating the deployment of the driver’s frontal airbag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Honda will notify owners of this recall, and dealers will replace the inflator, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule.

Recall Due to Possible Failure to Deploy

On February 2, 2016, Honda announced a recall of about 341,444 model year 2008-2010 Honda Accord vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the airbag control units may corrode and fail. If the airbag control unit fails, the airbags may not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of occupant injury.

Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the airbag control units, free of charge. Parts are expected to be available in Fall 2016. Interim notifications will be mailed to owners beginning on March 15, 2016, and a second notice will be mailed when remedy parts are available. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-800-999-1009. Honda’s number for this recall is JW9.
