Airbag Recall, Round 2 for 2.12 Million Vehicles

Defective airbags prompted a recall of 2.12 million vehicles: Acura MDX, Dodge Viper, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Liberty, Honda Odyssey, Pontiac Vibe, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Matrix and Toyota Avalon models made in the early 2000s. The defect may cause airbags to deploy inadvertently, even if there is not a crash. An electronic component from TRW Automotive Holdings Corp. is thought to be the culprit.

This is the second round of recalls by Chrysler, Honda and Toyota to address this problem. The “fixes” associated with the first recalls did not work. We are hoping manufacturers get the job done this time.

An airbag randomly deploying could severely injure a driver or passenger. Clearly, manufacturers have dropped the ball too many times here and have put consumers at risk of serious injury and wrongful death.

Although the problem appears to be with the electronic component manufactured by TRW Automotive Holdings Corp., manufacturers are responsible for fixing the problem and for compensating for any harm caused by the defective airbags.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has identified about 40 vehicles in which airbags deployed unexpectedly after being “fixed” under the original recall.

1 Million Toyota and Honda Vehicles Also Subject to Takata Airbag Recall

Anyone owning a Toyota or Honda vehicle subject to this recall should act quickly because about 1 million Toyota and Honda vehicles involved in these new recalls are also subject to a recall related to defective Takata airbags that can explode and spray metal into drivers and passengers. Several people have died.

Because the repairs under the new recall may take a year, NHTSA is urging Toyota and Honda owners to get the repair under the original recall and the repair under the Takata recall, while they are waiting to get this second round of repairs under the TRW recall. According to NHTSA, the original remedy is better than nothing.

Consumers should be aware that other makes and models not covered under this round of recalls may have a defective TRW part.
