Our lawyers have won cases involving bacterial contamination and kidney failure.

Fresenius Medical Care Holdings, Inc. has recalled certain lots of NaturaLyte Liquid Bicarbonate Concentrate due to contamination with Halomonas bacteria.  There has been one reported wrongful death and 2 reports of personal injury related to this product.

The problem with the product is that the recalled lots of NaturaLyte may develop higher than expected bacteria levels during the shelf life indicated on the label.  The investigation into the reports of death and illness included testing unopened bottles of the product. This testing found bacterial contamination and identified the bacteria as Halomonas (species 1, 2, 3), which is typically found in water with high salt concentration.

Lawsuit for Sepsis, Bacteremia and Death from NaturaLyte

Our lawyers are available to help people sickened by NaturaLyte Liquid Bicarbonate Concentrate. This product is used for the treatment of renal failure (kidney failure) during hemodialysis.  The product is specifically formulated to be used with a three-stream hemodialysis machine, which is calibrated for acid and bicarbonate concentrates. The recalled lots of this product could introduce the dangerous pathogen Halomonas into the patient’s bloodstream.

If Halomonas infects the bloodstream, it can travel throughout the body and cause infections in multiple organs. Bacteremia is the medical term for bacteria in the blood. This is sometimes called blood poisoning. Bacteremia can lead to sepsis, inflammation throughout the body caused by the bacteria in the blood. The inflammation can damage multiple organs and cause them to fail.

Sepsis can lead to septic shock, a drastic drop in blood pressure to a dangerously low level. Septic shock can be fatal. Survivors of sepsis caused by NaturaLyte have personal injury claims against Fresenius Medical Care Holdings, Inc. If the patient dies, his or her family has a wrongful death claim against the company and can sue for compensation under specific laws meant to help families get justice.

Our lawyers are some of the very few in the United States who have litigated hundreds of personal injury and wrongful death cases against corporations that sold products contaminated with bacteria. Currently, attorney Fred Pritzker is working on several cases of poisoning from a medical product given to premature babies. The babies became severely ill, and some of them died.
