“You helped me get a new leg.”
I was still in a coma from my motorcycle accident when my sister, who is a very savvy investment banker, connected me with the Pritzker Hageman law firm. After I woke up, Eric Hageman visited me. I could tell he was a great guy, someone with a heart of gold.
The accident was 100 percent the fault of the other driver and the crash left me with a traumatic brain injury and only one leg. I needed care throughout the day and night.
I was broke and I was disabled. I had no medical insurance. My medical bills would surpass $1 million. I kept thinking, how am I going to earn an income now? How can I make a living?
Eric and his team were like, “We got this. We’ll take care of you. You’re all right.’’ It was an incredible help to have them in my corner.
My lawyers put me in touch with one of the country’s best prosthetists, a local guy who works with athletes in the paralympics. Long before we had a settlement, I had a leg and that meant a lot. The doctor was like, “Here you go. Pay me later.”
It all turned out not so bad. I get to live again. I get to work again. The settlement money was more than enough to keep me afloat. I have a new place to live.
As I look ahead, I have ongoing medical issues and I’m at risk for another stroke as a result of the accident. But I’ve been able to move on. I can breathe free and not worry about it too much.
