Legionnaires’ Disease at Brookdale Eddy Pond

Legionnaires’ Disease Symptoms

Symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease usually develop within days of exposure. Sometimes symptoms, which include fever, cough, headache, muscle aches, and shortness of breath can appear within a couple of days, sometimes it can take as long as 14 days.

Some people are at elevated risk of contracting Legionnaires’ disease including people over 55, people with chronic disease or compromised immune systems, and current or former smokers.

Although Legionella are found in nature, they grow best in the warm water of human-made structures, particularly the complicated plumbing systems of commercial buildings. Because hospitals and nursing homes have such plumbing systems and have at-risk populations, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) considers it essential that they have water management programs in place to control for Legionella.

Brookdale Eddy Pond, located at 669 Washington Street is owned by Brookdale Senior Living in Brentwood, TN. A statement released to the media indicates that more than one resident may be ill. It reads in part:

“Our greatest concern is the health of the residents of our community, so we have responded quickly and proactively to this situation. We cannot comment on the identified case(s) given confidentiality restrictions. We are working with a national water treatment company and are following their protocols and recommendations regarding Legionella bacteria. At this time, no one knows the source of the bacteria; however, we are taking a proactive approach to help stop any spread of this bacteria.”
