E. coli is the main cause of meningitis in neonates and most cases of E. coli meningitis occur in newborn babies or the elderly. The mortality rate for E. coli meningitis in neonates is a grim 40 – 80%. Many of those infants that do survive have neurological or developmental abnormalities.
