DEFECTIVE TIRE RECALLS

TOYO TIRE RECALL: Toyo Tire Holdings of Americas Inc. is recalling certain Nitto Terra Grappler All Terrain, Toyo Open Country A/T and Toyo Proxes ST II tires. The Nitto Terra Grappler All Terrain tires under recall are in size 305/50R20.

Some of the recalled Toyo tires may have been produced with a wrinkle in the upper sidewall area of the tires. Under certain circumstances, this wrinkle may eventually lead to a crack in the sidewall. If a crack develops and is left undetected, the tire may fail, potentially causing a crash, possibly resulting in injury or death.

COOPER TIRE RECALL: Cooper Tire is recalling certain Discoverer H/T and Discoverer LSX tires, size 245/70R17, produced between November 15 and December 12, 2009. These tires fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 139, "New Pneumatic Radial Tires for Light Vehicles." At various mileages, the recalled tires may develop and exhibit tread chunking or cracking in the tread shoulder area. Tread chunks may separate from the tire casing, resulting in body damage to the vehicle, or the driver may lose control, resulting in crash.

WESTLAKE, TELLURIDE, COMPASS AND YKS BRAND CHINESE-MADE TIRE RECALL: Defective TireWestlake, Telluride, Compass and YKS tires imported by Foreign Tire Sales Inc. (FTS) are being recalled due to a dangerous defect. Gum strips are required on tires to prevent tread separation.  The Chinese manufacturer used inadequate gum strips or no gum strips on as many as 450,000 tires that FTS imported and sold to companies such as Ford and General Motors.  The tires can fall apart while in use, causing crashes and rollovers.

The defective tires are responsible for at least two deaths.  A lawsuit was filed in May against General Motors after a tire separation caused a Chevrolet van to rollover, leaving 2  men dead and one with a severe traumatic brain injury.  The wrongful death suit is McCulley v. General Motors, April Term 2007, No. 4376, Court of Common Pleas, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.

The recalled Chinese tires sold under the brand names Westlake, Telluride, Compass and YKS were used on a number of vehicles sold in the Unites States, including Ford and General Motors.
