Outbreak Information
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines a food poisoning outbreak as an incident in which two or more persons experience a similar illness resulting from the ingestion of a common food. Federal and state laws require public and health officials to report incidences of foodborne illness. This effort has uncovered numerous foodborne-disease outbreaks, including Shigella outbreaks, over the last several years.
The following are some of the current Shigella outbreaks. There have been only a few documented Shigella outbreaks in the United States. We have recently contacted the CDC and the complete CDC list of 2004 Shigella outbreaks should be available in a few weeks. We will post 2004 Shigella outbreak information on this page as soon as it becomes available.
Selected Shigella Outbreaks from 2002-2003:
State |
Victims | Food Product | Location | Date |
| Pennsylvania | 43 | Coffee, Cream Puff, Ice | Restaurant or Deli | 2003 |
| Colorado | 56 | Honeydew Melon | Restaurant or Deli | 2003 |
| California | 48 | Beef Dishes | Fair, Festival, Mobile Locations | 2003 |
| California | 14 | Ethnic Food | Restaurant or Deli | 2002 |
| California | 3 | Guacamole | Restaurant or Delicatessen | 2002 |
| Florida | 2 | Fried Shrimp; Salad | Restaurant or Deli | 2002 |
No matter where you eat—at home, at work, at the fair, or at a restaurant—Shigella is a risk. The best you can do is to learn how to prevent Shigella and to be aware of Shigella symptoms.
Current Shigella Outbreaks:
April 2006 – Two children who attend the Family and Children’s Education Services (FACES) center in Brunswick, Georgia, have been diagnosed with shigellosis. The 320 students ages 3 to 5 who attend the FACES program in Brunswick, Georgia, are at risk for infection with the Shigella bacteria, which is the cause of shigellosis.
