The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines a food poisoning outbreak as an incident in which two or more persons experience a similar illness resulting from the ingestion of a common food. Federal and state laws require public and health officials to report incidences of foodborne illness. This effort has uncovered numerous foodborne-disease outbreaks, including Shigella food poisoning outbreaks, over the last several years.
Recent Shigella Outbreaks
Shigellosis Outbreak Associated with Subway in Lombard, Illinois
An outbreak of shigellosis (an illness caused by Shigella bacteria) has been associated with a Subway restaurant located at 1009 E. Roosevelt Road in Lombard, which has been closed pending further results of the investigation. As of the afternoon of March 4, 2010, eight cases of shigellosis have been laboratory confirmed. Four cases have been hospitalized, with at least one case discharged and recovering at home.
Shigella Outbreak Associated with Souplantation in California
The Pasadena Public Health Department’s ongoing Shigella outbreak investigation, in coordination with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, has identified a total of 44 confirmed or suspected cases linked to the Souplantation in Pasadena on Lake Avenue.
Shigella Outbreak Linked to FACES in Brunswick, Georgia
Two children who attend the Family and Children’s Education Services (FACES) center in Brunswick, Georgia, have been diagnosed with shigellosis.
