On June 16, 2009, an FDA warning letter sent to Matrixx Initiatives prompted the company to recall Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel, Zicam Cold Remedy Gel Swabs, and Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size.
The FDA warning letter to Matrixx Initiatives stated in part:
FDA has concluded that these products may pose a serious risk to consumers who use them. Specifically, FDA has received more than 130 reports of anosmia, (loss of sense of smell, which in some cases can be long-lasting or permanent), associated with use of these products.
To protect consumers, and in light of the violations described below, we ask that within fifteen working days of receipt of this letter, you notify this office in writing of the specific steps that you have taken to correct the violations.
Matrixx stated in a press release:
Matrixx Initiatives vigorously disagrees with the FDA's allegations that these products are not safe and that they were unlawfully marketed.
Matrixx maintains this position even though, according to its 2009 annual report, filed just 8 days before the recall of the Zicam products, stated that the company had defended itself against hundreds of allegations of smell loss (anosmia) from Zicam Cold Remedy products. And an FDA inspection of the Matrixx plant in May of 2009 found that Matrixx had received over 800 reports of smell loss from Zicam Cold Remedy products and had not reported them to the FDA.
